I want to make a scarf for my significant other...?

I wanted to make a scarf for my significant other. I found a really nice pattern, http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-hatScarf.html?noImages= , but I'm afraid it would be too girly. Is it to girly? If so, does someone know of another pattern that would be better? I may just do a plain double crochet scarf, but I'd like it to be especially nice. I am somewhat familiar with knitting as well, so if someone has a knitting pattern they like, that would be good too :).
