Did the paintings of 'jesus' as a white guy with light brown hair reinforce some of the negative feelings?

toward people of African descent in the slave-holding southern states of the USA. Did the idea that 'jesus' was one of 'us' (central and northern european) make it easier to develop the kind of racial prejudice that was promoted by southern churches? (and still was, well into the 1970s)
